My first child Connah was diagnosed with a nut allergy at 6 months old. This changed everything for us as we now had to check all food labels and also beauty products. Our food shopping took a lot longer and cost a bit more. Going to family and friends parties was a real headache and we had to avoid some restaurants all together. This was before the law came in, in which all food sellers had to provide allergy information.
In 2014 Connah was 21 months old when Chris and I got married. Finding a venue and caterer who could guarantee nut free was hard. Finding a cake supplier who could guarantee nut free was even harder. Especially on a small budget! I knew at this point I wanted to help lighten the burden on allergy families, both in the choice of cakes they could buy and the price being affordable for the average low income families. Researching the cake making from home was very daunting and I decided the time wasn't right for me.
It wasn't until I had my second child, Travis, in 2015 that I began to really grow in confidence. I passed my English level 2 functional skills and also a few other short courses. I realized my abilities didn't stop at being a mom and I was much more comfortable in my mom role so I could now venture out to other things. I began researching the cake business again and decided it would be best if I developed my business as a standard work from home business and then with all the necessary things in place to run a safe food business I could start to research and introduce allergy free cakes. A friend suggested I try supplying slimming world, weight watchers and diabetic friendly cakes too.
So this is where I am now. Baking cakes from home and researching cake recipes for dietary requirements.
My goal is to be able to offer 'A Cupcake for everyone’.
